I have had a Victorinox paring knife for many years, and love it. It’s a great little knife.

That being said, if I were in a store picking out knives, I don’t believe I would select this set. The handles are super light, and frankly, really cheap feeling, and that degrades the impression they make. They don’t “feel” like quality.

As this point, because they are so new, they are super sharp and work well. I’m just not sure how they will stand the test of time.

I believe that there are better quality knives out there in the same price point, or slightly more. Shop around.

This set is nothing more than adequate. If you are looking for something short term to get you through, they might be the right thing. But for long term, I think you can do better.

I have the Victorinox steak knives that have a nice feel in the hand and have retained their sharpness over the course of a few years. So when I was given the opportunity to try this set out I was looking forward to adding to my current collection of Wusthofs.

The box arrived and first I noticed that all of the knives were packed inside the block. I only had to remove the shrink wrap after pulling the entire block out of the box. The first knife I pulled out was the tomato/ bagel knife. I actually had to do a double take and read the box to find out what this was for. The handle is very thin, super light weight and remarkably plastic. It feels cheap, the blade was incredibly flexible, which isn’t a good thing in a tomato knife.

The larger knives, like the 8 inch Chef knife didn’t have the thick blade. Even the handle was a little more substantial. And the best part, the kitchen shears, were solid and comfortable to hold. Sadly, they do not come apart to clean. Because of this, I wouldn’t recommend them for all uses, like cutting up raw chicken, which I do like to do with my shears. The block seems to be standard but the sharpening steel has the same flimsy handle.

All in all I was quite disappointed in the quality and am not interested in keeping this for my own use. As a set for a first, right out of college apartment, this would be an ok gift. But not the level of wedding present.

I’m uploading some pictures so you can see the quality control issues I am mentioning in this review.

This was part of the Vine program, so I did not pay for these knives, but if I had paid for them, they would be on their way back right now. The commonly accepted wisdom when buying knives is that you get what you pay for and this set seems to confirm that.

Right out of the box, the knife block itself was in extremely poor shape. Note the photos that show the logo was not completely colored in…I suspect this is supposed to look like a “wood burned” logo, but is instead cheaply printed on with ink. In this case, the stamping is incomplete. Also note the scratches on the block around the base.

The knives themselves are obviously cheap and do not handle well. Blades cut okay for now, but this won’t last and I don’t think they will sharpen well. Brand new, they should be great, and they are not. I am never sure what is preferable in knives…lightweight or heavyweight (I’ve heard people refer to both as desirable), but I’ll just tell you that these are super light. I also uploaded a picture that shows that the difference in material between the larger knives and the two smaller ones. The smaller knives are really like the paring/slicing knives you might buy at any grocery store in their little kitchen utensils section (my grocery store has one anyway)…basic plastic handles.

The handles on the bigger knives are slightly different…might also be plastic, but they are not as shiny. Very, very lightweight as well. Not sure if this matters, just trying to mention it.

The scissors are very stiff and cheap feeling. I might try to loosen them a bit but since the hinge is covered with metal button this might not work.

Incidentally, the picture of the knife on the product page…the one that has a Santoku look with the little sort of cutouts on the side? It’s not included in this set at all.

I was not impressed with this set. I sent it back for a refund. Upon receiving, I found that the packaging of the knife set was not good. The knives were actually packed in the block, which if packed properly would have been OK, but one of the knives had come out of the block and was somehow “stuck” back into the wood of the block like an arrow (not in a slot). The composite handles on the larger knives seemed OK but the same material on the smaller knives seem too light weight giving them a cheap feel. Overall it was not the quality set that I wanted to give as a gift.

This knife set is as good as professional quality. The convenient block holds the entire set and fits easily on the counter even in a small kitchen. The handles have a good feel, especially in the larger knives and the blades are sharp and true. Adding a pair of kitchen shears is a nice bonus. A top set and a great gift.
